Tree House | Winterthur, Switzerland | 2021
[Orso Studio]

Initial situation
The owner wished to convert the top two floors of the small apartment house into their family apartment. The house is situated in a beautiful location near the old town, surrounded by centuries-old trees.

Concept
Clear lines draw shapes, which together with their materials and colors, create atmospherically strong spaces. Spaces that can be constantly rediscovered through light and shadow.

The attic was twisted and gloomy. We removed the small-scale chambering and redesigned it into an open, airy living space. The attic space lives from its meeting different slopes. We exposed this quality and enhanced its effect.

Around the central chimney in the attic, which runs diagonally through the room, we developed a piece of furniture that is a room divider, storage space, seating landscape as well as a staircase to the “observatory”, from where one can wonderfully watch the sky. When looking out of the ribbon windows in the attic, one finds oneself in the midst of the leaves of the centuries-old trees, which creates a feeling of living in a tree house.
