[Peter Krebs]

Peter Krebs completed pure and minimalistic Petrus and Jakobus church in Karlsruhe, Germany in 2017.

The new Petrus Jakobus Church replaces two simple churches from the post-war period. Located in the middle of the district, it forms the southern boundary of the central square in Karlsruhe’s north-west city. A courtyard connects the church and the community center. The church and community hall of the Protestant Petrus Jacobus community stand opposite each other as two independent volumes. And a small devotional chapel in the green patio that accompanies everything complements the ensemble.

The church’s interior is shaped by natural light from above and made of natural materials. In the windows of the Petrus-Jakobus-Kirche the merger of the two congregations found its completion. Red window niches from the old Petrus church and blue ribbon windows from the earlier Jakobus church ennoble the otherwise reduced sacred space.

The uniform lime-washed brick facades and the roofs of different heights and pitches unite the various sections of the structure to form a whole.
