Located at the intersection of two lively streets in Montreal's Villeray neighbourhood, Restaurant Berto, designed by Mise à jour Studio, integrates seamlessly into the local urban fabric. The project reinterprets the defining qualities of the traditional Italian osteria; conviviality, simplicity, and a celebration of quality ingredients, through a contemporary Montréal perspective. With careful attention to materials and detailing, the design showcases the restaurant's culinary and sommelier expertise while highlighting the craftsmanship of the many artisans involved in the project.
Given the generous size of the space, the layout was conceived as a sequence of distinct atmospheres, allowing guests to experience different moods within a single restaurant. The main dining room is organized around a series of circular banquettes oriented toward a large central bar, the heart of the restaurant. These twelve counter seats invite guests to witness the expertise of the bar team, as well as the Pasta Box, a dedicated workspace where fresh pasta is crafted by hand, celebrating the artisanal process behind every dish.
Through its atmosphere and material palette, the project draws inspiration from iconic Italian dining establishments. Boldly patterned natural stone is paired with rich dark wood species and soft, tactile finishes to create a warm, enveloping environment. The ceramic floor pattern subtly references the classic checkerboard floors found in traditional Italian restaurants, while accents of blue, echoed in the custom tableware and the graphic identity of the menus, punctuate the otherwise warm and richly layered interior.
Wood plays a central role throughout the project in the form of a series of arches and wall millwork that frame the main dining room and define the various spaces. Conceived as a natural extension of the culinary experience, the design celebrates craftsmanship through the integration of an impressive six-barrel balsamic vinegar battery imported from Modena. As the restaurant's signature feature, it embodies Berto's philosophy: valuing time, craftsmanship, and the quality of exceptional ingredients.
This attention to detail extends to every piece of custom furniture, designed with generous proportions and fluid circulation to maximize comfort and elevate the dining experience. Through Berto, Mise à jour Studio has created a restaurant that is elegant yet approachable, refined without being formal, a vibrant, generous destination deeply rooted in its neighbourhood.
