The apartment is located on the second floor of a typical Marais building in Paris, constructed before 1800. Prior to its renovation, it served as a metalworker’s art studio. The renovation project focused on preserving the spirit of the space while introducing new functionality suited to residential use. The layout clearly separates the daytime living areas from the sleeping quarters. The design also anticipates a future separation between the entrance and the first bedroom with dressing room, allowing for the potential creation of a private office with a waiting area.
Thanks to its through-plan layout and large bay windows, the apartment enjoys abundant natural light. The kitchen occupies a central position at the intersection of the entrance, the living room, and the sleeping area. As the true heart of the home, it is a key passageway. Its symmetrical layout, oriented around two windows, linear worktop, and future dining table make it a convivial space, ideal for connection beyond mealtimes. Directly connected to the kitchen, the living room features the classic characteristics of buildings from this period: a marble fireplace and ornate moldings.
The bedrooms are designed with simplicity and care. The bathrooms showcase a play of volumes and textures: cream zellige tile walls and green porcelain stoneware floors. This material palette continues in the kitchen, where stainless steel cabinetry adds an industrial touch that echoes the site’s history. Original flooring materials—particularly the herringbone parquet and terracotta tiles—have been restored. Lastly, special attention was given to the wooden structural beams and posts, which have been revealed and highlighted in every room of the apartment. Text description by the architects.
