Apartment Renovation in Bergen
Apartment renovation in a timber building from 1892, Bergen.
The renovation began by removing later additions to reveal the original timber structure, colours, and traces of use. These layers formed the basis of the new design. Non-loadbearing partitions were removed to clarify the plan and give the apartment a more coherent spatial logic.
Reuse was central throughout the process. Material from demolished internal walls was repurposed for new interior elements, while original bricks, tiles, flooring, and light fixtures were reused in other projects.
The layout was adapted to contemporary living: the bedroom now faces the courtyard, the kitchen opens directly to the living area, and the bathroom keeps its original position. After levelling the floors, pine planks were installed to restore the apartment’s original material character.
The original colours informed the new palette. Added surfaces and materials were chosen to sit in a quiet dialogue with the existing tones, creating a subtle and enduring interplay rather than a contrast or a recreation.
Custom furniture was designed specifically for the apartment. Text description by the architects.
