In 2019 we were granted the privilege to erect our design for an addition to the Hagen school building in Altdorf. The extension was to create a new experience in harmony with the existing building while bringing new life to an already vibrant place.

In accordance with the urban planning and layout typology, the expansion fluidly connects with the grid of the existing structures with its own contemporary identity. The additional building resonates with the location through its scale and design while communicating a new expression of simplicity and modernity.
Individual motifs and elements from the original schoolhouse have been reinterpreted, extending the connection between old and new to the finest details.
Inspiration also came from nearby, in particular Fritz Metzger’s neighboring Bernarda school. During our first visit, we were particularly touched by his interpretation of post-war modernism. With fine detailing, natural materials and playful elements, Metzger created a building that exudes empathy and comfort which, in our opinion, is still paramount today. In the design of the Hagen School, we incorporated similar spatial values to revitalize and bring warmth to the sober, rigid school building with limited, however distinctive intervention.
Newly added elements, such as the carefully designed fixtures, round windows and metal animal motifs give the interior a more playful, child-friendly atmosphere. Unique details of the exterior such as the round glass portal in the gable, asymmetrical windows and soothing palate unify the structure. The new extension welcomes visitors with modern clarity that is homogenous with the landscape and reinvigorates the entire campus. Text description by the architects.
