Drayton Residence | Pointe-Claire Québec, Canada | 2022
[Dany Durand Courchesne Architecte]

The new house takes place in a green residential neighborhood of Montréal West Island. The vegetation, the distinctive and heterogeneous elements of the surrounding residences mark the particularity and interest of the Vieux Pointe-Claire district. The lot of the proposed project was subdivided from an existing lot with a 1913 residence. This new residence is integrated into the neighbourhood by not creating clones of the old residences. The building is inspired by the formal and material peculiarities of the surrounding houses and is defined by its own architectural qualities.

The two volumes of the new construction are located to the north on the narrow and perpendicular lot to the street to open to the southeast and the courtyard. This implantation benefits from a maximum interior and exterior brightness throughout the day. Two roofs with two slopes complete the volumes. A simple palette of reddish monochrome materials envelops the proposed building. The 2 distinct volumes of the composition are similar to the typology present in Old Pointe-Claire and the adjacent buildings of the project by their dimensions, heights and proportions. The interior is minimalist where all the components and finishes are mostly white to create a timeless space with an emphasis on the surrounding nature.

The Drayton residence offers a soft and interesting densification that could be an example in the use and subdivision of an existing detached house project site. The proposed elements magnify the banal intrinsic qualities of the lots present in Quebec territory of medium suburban density to create a project of timeless quality, simple, compact and open to its environment.
