CS1 & CS2 | Los Angeles, California | 2020
[HA+MA – HAWKINS+MARSHALL]

CS1 & CS2 are two structures providing community and recreational spaces in Los Angeles, CA.

CS1
Set on a ridge in the rolling hills of Los Angeles, CA, with panoramic views across the city and the mountains beyond, CS1 is seen from afar as a small folly, set within in a grove of mature oak trees. Constructed of simple palette of materials – brick, stone, wood and glass, the space provides new utilities and amenities while a striking cantilever offers shade, a place to socialize and frames dramatic views across the Southern Californian landscape.

CS2
CS2 is a new community and teaching facility in the center of Los Angeles. Set within the grade of the existing landscape, the building is composed around a courtyard garden creating quiet, naturally ventilated spaces. Here, spaces for learning are crafted with a simple palette of wood, concrete and limestone, hiding the latest computer and teaching technology within the heavy walls. A series of glass planes open up and slide away, blurring the boundaries between the sheltered interior and the surrounding landscape.
